Sabeer Bhatia
is the co-founder of Hotmail. He along with Jack Smith came up with
the concept of a web-based database entitled Javasoft. While pursuing
this idea, they subsequently realised the potential of a web-based
e-mail system and thus decided to create one called Hotmail which
was launched on July 4, 1996. In less than six months, the website
attracted over 1 million subscribers. As the interest in the web-based
email provider increased, Microsoft eventually took notice and on
December 30, 1997, Hotmail was sold to Microsoft for a reported
sum of $400 million. |

Rahul Dravid,
the former captain of the Indian Cricket Team has been the backbone
for the Indian cricket team. Beginning with the reputation of being
a defensive batsman who should be confined to Test cricket, he was
dropped from ODIs as he was slow in making runs. Of late, however,
Rahul Dravid has defied early perceptions to become the mainstay
of the Indian batting line-up in ODIs as well as in Tests. His nickname
of 'The Wall' in Reebok advertisements has now become a tribute
to his consistency. |

Robin Uthappa
an Indian cricketer, made his One-Day International debut in the
seventh and final match of the English tour of India in April 2006.
He had a successful debut, making 86 as an opening batsman before
being run out. It was the highest score for any Indian debutant
in a limited overs match. Uthappa first came to the public's attention
when he made 66 for India B against India A in the Challenger Trophy
in 2005. The following year, in the same tournament, Uthappa made
matchwinning 93-ball 100 against the same team which propelled him
in the big league. Previously, he had been a member of the India
under-19 team that won the Asia Cup. He was recalled to the ODI
side in January 2007 for the series against the West Indies where
he smashed a 70 from just 41 balls. He was selected in the 15-member
squad of the Indian Cricket team for the 2007 Cricket World Cup
held in the West Indies in March-April 2007.

From Bangalore to Connecticut,
and doing commentary on All India Radio, to founding WorldTel in
1989, Mark Mascarenhas
has come a long way. The bespectacled, beefy bossman of the sports
telecast and marketing firm which promotes batting maestro Sachin
Tendulkar left India in 1976 at 19 and went to America to do his
Masters in communication. After staying away from cricket for 16
years, he got into the thick of things once again when he learnt
that India was to stage the 1996 cricket World Cup and the organising
committee was looking for someone to buy the television rights of
the tournament. That was in April 1993. Four months later, after
the bidding was over, WorldTel had won the rights for the tournament,
jointly hosted by India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. |

how he got through four years of Mechanical Engineering in college
where is main achievement was to organise tennis-ball cricket tournaments.

some selector some day will spot his wicketkeeping talent.

Ashish
Ballal,
India's ace hockey goalkeeper. An Arjuna Awardee in 1996; Bangkok
Asian Games Gold Medallist in 1998 and silver medallist in the 1994
Asian Games held at Hiroshima, Japan. Member of the Indian team
at the Barcelona Olympic Games held in 1992. Captain of the Indian
Airlines Hockey Team; and the list of his achievements goes on and
on and on. Three of his elder brothers were goalkeepers. Though
they never made it to the highest levels of International hockey,
Ashish's induction into the game was therefore, quite natural. Although
he did play football and cricket while at school. He was a talent
that was "spotted" at a junior level club game. Playing
for a small club - Benson Hockey Club - they beat the then favourites,
Karnataka State Police team in a league encounter. Ashish's performance
in that game just couldn't be ignored. He was straightaway plummeted
into the 1988 State Junior team to participate in the Junior Nationals
held at Lucknow. He played so well that his inclusion into the Indian
junior team was a foregone conclusion. From then on, there was no
looking back for Ashish. A string of excellent performances at the
junior level soon paved the way for his entry into the senior slot.
And the high point of his career was when he was selected to take
part in the Barcelona Olympic Games. For this six-foot-two tall,
28-year old bachelor, the competitive spirit has not diminished
one bit. He's confident that he'll make a "comeback".
Ashish believes in taking things in his stride. The important thing
is winning. Isn't that every "goalie's goal?"

Spontaneity springs
from Nikhil Chinnappa,
the country's highest-paid Video Jockey. He studied to be an architect,
did his thesis in hospital design and was all set to eke a living
as a bartender on a cruise liner when MTV came a calling. "I
was always mad for the radio.I chose TV because I had to come back
to radio." With more than a lakh per month , Nikhil has done
whatever he wanted - rafted in the Ganges at Haridwar, skydived
in the USA, and bungee-jumped in Australia. "Most of all, I
have enjoyed my work and so, life." How does it feel to be
so hugely successful at such a young age? "I am enjoying as
much as Bill Gates or any farmer who's had a flourish. But I still
go and buy my own bread." |
